Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained online.
